Rolex 1803 Service: The Rolex Day-Date 1803 is an enduring classic, celebrated for its timeless design and the innovation it brought to the world of horology. Powered by the Rolex Calibre 1555, this model has been a symbol of elegance and precision since its introduction. Recently, we had the opportunity to perform a Rolex 1803 Service on a watch that, while no longer running, held immense sentimental and historical value. Purchased at an auction a decade ago, this timepiece had worked for a short period before spending the last five or six years tucked away in a drawer.

Assessing the Watch’s Condition
When the watch arrived, it was a non-runner with a slipping crown spring that made winding ineffective. The mainspring barrel showed signs of past mishandling, likely caused by the improper use of tweezers during a previous service. The bracelet was heavily worn, but the owner opted not to repair it, choosing instead to pair the watch with a sophisticated alligator leather strap. Despite these issues, the case tube threads were in great shape, and no significant damage was found within the movement.

Disassembling the Calibre 1555 – Rolex 1803 Service
We began by carefully disassembling the Calibre 1555, a robust and reliable automatic movement introduced in the 1960s. Every component was inspected to determine which parts required replacement. The mainspring barrel and its mainspring were flagged for replacement due to visible damage, while the worn crown spring also required attention to restore proper winding functionality.

Each jewel, gear, and pivot was meticulously cleaned to remove old lubricants and debris, ensuring that all friction points were ready for fresh lubrication. The disassembly process is critical for vintage watches, as it provides an opportunity to assess the condition of components that may have been compromised over decades of use.
Cleaning and Reassembly – Rolex 1803 Service
After manual cleaning, the movement’s parts were placed in a specialized cleaning machine. This multi-stage process involved an initial cleaning solution to remove stubborn grime, followed by several rinsing cycles to leave the components spotless. Once cleaned, each part was carefully inspected under magnification to ensure it met Rolex’s exacting standards.
During reassembly, a new mainspring and barrel were installed, along with the replacement crown spring. High-quality lubricants were applied at critical points to ensure smooth operation and reduce wear over time. The automatic winding mechanism, balance wheel, and escapement were adjusted to restore the Calibre 1555’s precision.

Case and Bracelet Refinement
The watch’s yellow gold case underwent gentle cleaning and polishing to enhance its appearance while preserving its vintage charm, while a new acrylic crystal allowed for a full unhampered view of the stunning dial. Although the owner chose not to restore the worn bracelet, the case was prepared to accommodate the elegant alligator leather strap that would replace it. This pairing gave the watch a fresh and modern look without detracting from its classic appeal.

Testing and Quality Assurance – Rolex 1803 Service
Once reassembled, the Calibre 1555 was carefully calibrated to ensure it met Rolex’s standards for accuracy and reliability. The watch was then subjected to a multi-day testing period, during which timekeeping performance, power reserve, and overall functionality were monitored closely. By the end of the process, the Day-Date 1803 was running beautifully, ready to be worn and admired once more.
