Seiko SKX Repair: Reviving an Iconic Diver’s Watch
The Seiko SKX series is one of the most celebrated lines of diver’s watches ever produced. Introduced in 1996 and produced until its discontinuation in 2019, the SKX remains a favorite among collectors and enthusiasts for its rugged reliability, timeless design, and exceptional value. Built to meet ISO 6425 standards for diver’s watches, it’s a timepiece engineered to withstand the rigors of underwater exploration. Its legendary status was further cemented when an SKX variant appeared in the 2013 survival film All is Lost.
Recently, we had the privilege of performing a Seiko SKX repair on a much-loved example powered by the robust Calibre 7S26. This watch, owned by its current custodian for over 20 years, had stopped working last year. With dried-out gaskets making the crown almost impossible to turn, broken dial feet, and a scratched crystal, it was clear that the watch needed expert attention to bring it back to life.
The History of the Seiko SKX
The Seiko SKX made its debut as the successor to the Seiko 7002, bringing improved functionality and a more modern design to the brand’s line of diver’s watches. Over its 23-year production run, the SKX became synonymous with reliability and affordability, with models like the SKX007 and SKX009 becoming instant classics.
The watch adhered to ISO 6425 standards, which certified it as a true diver’s watch capable of withstanding underwater conditions up to 200 meters. Features like the screw-down crown, unidirectional bezel, and luminous hands ensured it was a functional tool for divers, while its bold yet versatile design made it equally popular on dry land.
The SKX series was discontinued in 2019, but its enduring legacy has kept demand for these watches alive in the pre-owned market. Models like the SKX007, with its classic black dial and bezel, and the Pepsi-themed SKX009 remain highly sought after by collectors.
Assessing the Watch – Seiko SKX Repair
The SKX we serviced had clearly seen years of use and affection. The movement, powered by the automatic Calibre 7S26, showed the expected signs of wear, with degraded lubricants and dirt buildup contributing to its failure to run. The broken dial feet rendered the dial loose, affecting the overall integrity of the watch.
Externally, the crystal had accumulated numerous scratches, making it difficult to appreciate the dial beneath. The watch’s gaskets were brittle and shrunken, compromising its water resistance and making the crown extremely stiff to operate. Additionally, the customer opted for a new Seiko Z22 strap, a perfect complement to the iconic design of the SKX.
The Repair Process – Seiko SKX Repair
Our Seiko SKX repair began with the careful disassembly of the Calibre 7S26 movement. Each component was meticulously inspected for wear or damage, and all jewel holes and pivots were pegged to remove old oils and grime. The parts were then ultrasonically cleaned in a multi-stage process to ensure they were spotless before reassembly.
The broken dial feet were replaced, securing the dial in place once more. The original crystal was swapped out for a new OEM Seiko Hardlex, restoring clarity while maintaining the watch’s authentic appearance. New gaskets were fitted throughout, addressing the issue with the crown and restoring the watch’s water resistance.
Fresh lubricants were applied at critical friction points during reassembly, ensuring the movement operated smoothly. The beat error was corrected, which improved both amplitude and timekeeping accuracy.
Final Touches and Testing – Seiko SKX Repair
Once the repairs were complete, the watch was thoroughly tested. It underwent a multi-day evaluation of timekeeping accuracy, power reserve, and the smooth rotation of the bezel. A pressure test was conducted to confirm that the new gaskets had fully restored the watch’s water resistance to its ISO 6425 standard.
Finally, the watch was paired with a new Seiko Z22 strap, a faithful choice that retains the original spirit of the SKX design.
